Suicide Prevention September: Holding Space for the Hurting.

There is a quiet, painful space that many in our communities occupy in absolute secrecy carrying burdens too heavy for words.

This September as we observe Suicide Prevention Month, Breakforth Foundation dedicated its voice to breaking the silence around mental health in Zambia. In a society where emotional suffering is often hidden due to cultural stigma, we want to say loudly: Your pain is real, your life matters, and you do not have to walk through the dark alone.

The Human Heart Behind the Statistics

Suicide prevention is an urgent plea for empathy. In Zambia, young people aged 15–29 and adult men face the highest risks. Behind the numbers are real human stories of youth suffocated by hopelessness, and suffering in isolation because expectations deny weakness.

At Breakforth, our everyday mission focuses on ending child marriages and combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV). These struggles are deeply connected to mental health. We see firsthand how the trauma of abuse, the loss of independence, and physical violence can push a human spirit into the darkest corners of depression. Tackling GBV and child marriage means also confronting heavy psychological fallout that threatens the lives of survivors every single day.

Radical Empathy Saves Lives

Preventing suicide starts with looking at the people around us with radical empathy, discarding the harmful myths that label depression as “weakness.”

We can all act as lifelines. Pay close attention to a friend who suddenly withdraws, a loved one who speaks with a heavy sense of hopelessness, or someone carrying the unseen scars of trauma.

Do not fear the conversation. Asking someone directly, “Are you thinking about giving up?” does not push them over the edge. Instead, it provides a life-saving exit ramp from their isolation. Listening without judgment or quick fixes is the greatest gift you can offer someone drowning in silence.

You Are Not Alone

Suicide prevention belongs to all of us. As September moves forward, let us pledge to be a community that listens, validates, and protects.

If the weight feels too heavy today, please reach out. There is strength in choosing to stay, and there is help waiting for you. You can access Zambia’s free, confidential, 24/7 national lifelines from any network:
